The key to 4Geeks Academy’s student success can be found in its immersive training and robust career services, also known as Geekforce.
Geekforce is a section entirely dedicated to 4Geeks Academy’s career services. As part of the bootcamp, these services prepare students for the job market by polishing their soft skills, preparing them for job interviews, and optimizing their LinkedIn profiles, among others. There is also a student and mentor community where knowledge and ideas are exchanged. More details are explained below.
- Unlimited professional support. Students receive professional guidance such as code reviews to help them sharpen their coding skills as well as instill the value of learning from others.
- Interview simulation. Students receive training on how to ace job interviews through mock interviews. During job-hunting, they also receive one-on-one meetings to review their communication skills and work on commonly asked interview questions.
- Lifetime mentoring. Students receive mentorship in honing their coding skills as well as their career skills through one-on-one meetings. These services are available to students even after they have completed the program. This will come in handy when they have landed their first job and need support navigating new waters.
- 4Geeks community. Students network and get to know each other on 4Geeks Academy’s Slack community channel. Some may find this community helpful during their job search because other students usually share job-related information such as links to open positions and more on this platform.
Alumni Reviews: Is 4Geeks Academy Worth It?
According to alumni reviews posted on Career Karma, 4Geeks Academy is worth it, garnering an average rating of 4.8 out of 5.
To learn more about what it’s like to be a student at the bootcamp, we interviewed two alumni about their lives before, during, and after 4Geeks Academy. While they both liked different parts of their 4Geeks experiences, they agreed on one thing: 4Geeks Academy became their number one choice because of the cost-value factor. Let’s dive deeper.
Niza’s Story
Niza Vera has a background in liberal arts and management information systems and only had a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS before 4Geeks Academy. Despite that, her dream was to become a full-fledged software developer. However, she would have to juggle between her full-time job and classes.
When COVID-19 struck, Niza saw a perfect opportunity to pursue her passion. “It was then I started conducting my research about coding bootcamps,” she said.
Finding the right bootcamp can be a daunting task, considering the number of options available. In Niza’s case, it was important to find a bootcamp that will fit into her work schedule while still providing the needed value.
“I did diligent research…From my findings, 4Geeks was offering an even better value at a more affordable cost than other bootcamps at that time,” she said.
She continued, “I was living in North Carolina when I was conducting my research with the intention to start once I move to South Florida. But in my meeting with [Marcelo Ricigliano, 4Geeks CEO], he encouraged me to start the bootcamp immediately if I could, which I did. This turned out to be the best decision I made because I would have had a lot to cover had I started later.”
Niza enrolled in the part-time 16-week Full Stack Developer program at 4Geeks Academy. She spoke at length about her experience at the bootcamp.
“The learning experience was great, and the professors were always available during and after classes to answer your questions. They would take short pauses between classes to allow students to digest information and to ask questions,” she said.
The support she received didn’t stop there. While some bootcamps and universities often leave their students to sink or swim in their job search, 4Geeks Academy was different said Niza as the bootcamp prepared her well for the job hunt.
“I sent 40+ job applications but got about five interviews. I made it to the final round of my third interview and landed my first job two months after completing my program at 4Geeks…I told a lot of students who came to me for help to stick to the 4Geeks plan. I know it works because I am a testimony,” she said.
“They even remind students to practice for job interviews. You know tech interviews can be intimidating, even for experts. The mock interviews provided me with the confidence I needed for my job interviews.”
She added, “My mentors at 4Geeks were super helpful. Even after graduation, they helped me through the whole job-hunting process. I felt safe with the feeling that I wasn’t alone.”
Niza now works as a full stack developer at Green Roads. Not only is she pursuing her dream job but she also remains confident in her skills, thanks to the training and support she received from 4Geeks Academy.
“I mostly work on the front end and my daily tasks involve bringing new projects to completion. In this regard, 4Geeks taught me well. And the environment is identical to the bootcamp. We have a working environment where juniors ask questions and seniors provide help, just like at 4Geeks. Everyone is learning together, and I like my company.”
This is Niza’s final piece of advice for those considering starting their career journey at 4Geeks Academy: “At 4Geeks, you are in great hands. Make sure you are driven with passion, and you should exercise perseverance. Furthermore, do the work, stick to the plan, ask questions, and good luck.”
Victor’s Story
Victor Salcedo has a background in customer management systems and was working with a non-profit organization in Washington DC. He had basic coding knowledge but wanted to go deeper into web development and explore the career opportunities it provides.
Some of the most crucial factors for prospective students to consider are proximity, cost-value, and quality when making their career journey decision. The same goes for Victor. In fact, he chose 4Geeks Academy because it checked all the boxes.
“I conducted diligent research and I found out that 4Geeks was running the program alongside Miami Gate College. Since that is closer to me, I decided to enroll. Also, they offered a more reasonable price than others from a cost-value perspective,” he said.
It may be tricky for many students to juggle between work and school especially when the hours overlap. Victor spoke about how the 4Geeks learning model fits into his work.
“The first thing I like most about 4Geeks is the remote classes, which fit perfectly with my work schedule. The part-time classes run from 6pm to 9pm and my work ends by 5pm. So, I didn’t have to worry about going late to classes, beating traffic, or being too tired to drive home from classes. All I had to do was take an hour’s rest and log on.”
Victor’s job search was short as he got an offer almost immediately after completing 4Geeks Academy. “I got hired for the first job I applied to. I applied last year in September, interviewed in January this year, and got the job [right after]. I can say that I am pretty lucky.”
He also talked about how his current job was made possible by being a part of the 4Geeks student community.
“The job link was shared on the 4Geeks students’ community Slack channel. I guess I wouldn’t have [come across] this job had it not been posted [there]. My career advisor also brushed me up on my interviewing skills. Shout out to Alejandro [Sanchez], the co-founder of 4Geeks Academy, he was also a great help,” Victor said.
“I am currently a server engineer apprentice at Microsoft. You know, you dream about these companies but are not sure if you will ever get in. Mine was different, I guess I was lucky,” he said.
Victor shares some insight on how you can keep going through the immersive program and what you should expect. “Have patience because it takes time. At some point, a lot will be expected from you that is why you should constantly learn. Give yourself time and be patient with yourself because it isn’t going to be easy,” he said.
