Jon Lin took the Pathstream Data Analytics Certificate at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering and started the program from an entirely different field. “Before the course, I started my career at Deloitte, and there I was really able to hone my business and analytical skills. Coming from a family of artists, over the last few years, I’ve been working as a project manager in the event planning industry. I’ve been scoping out projects and planning for people,” shared Jon.
“As someone transitioning from the creative world, I definitely saw the value and impact that data had on myself, as well as clients and overall business, so that’s why I started the Pathstream Data Analytics Certificate Program at NYU. That’s my pre-course experience,” he continued.
Jon ventured into other online courses before deciding to pursue a certificate program with Pathstream. “I’ve tried some other trials, and I wanted to see how those were. I was served a Pathstream ad, and when I looked through the syllabus, I felt that it was probably the best fit for me as it was still more like coursework, and the software was what I wanted, so it was fit for me,” Jon said.
“When I started, I was surprised with how much I liked it. I found the course structure better than my old college courses. I had an accounting background, but this is more interactive. There are labs, there are projects, and because the software was built in, I didn’t have to flip back and forth. It saves so much time and effort when it comes to retaining information to be able to apply it and memorize,” Jon also shared about the program.
He also shared about the Pathstream program flow, his learning experience, and the value he found in its hands-on projects. “It was three courses, and the first course was Business Analytics, the second course was SQL, and the third course was Tableau. The first course was mostly Excel-based. It made you think critically and learn about how to ask questions. That’s something I haven’t had to do much lately because I’ve been in the creative field, which is a different way of thinking.”
“I liked the structure, where you had to do your lessons, then on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, I’d work on the projects. The projects really built off of each other. It would usually be four projects, maybe, per course. Even though they were different scenarios, it was still really related to the course and curriculum. I thought that was very beneficial because then you’re not asking yourself, ‘Why am I doing this project?’ I thought it was really real-world-like”, Jon further explained.
Pathstream programs are fully supported by expert instructors who give individualized feedback. “When it came to coursework, the instructor was available all the time. Even though she’s working, she’s a VP at D.E. Shaw, even if she was busy with her own life and her own work, she was still online a lot of the time. She would respond when you had a question. Her feedback was great, and you knew that she knew what was happening and what was also practical.”
Jon also shared how Pathstream’s comprehensive career services, such as access to career advisors, resume writing, and practice interviews helped prepare him to land his first job in data analytics, working as a sales analyst at Epsilon.
“I first reached out to Career Services. They were really nice and helped a lot with confidence, especially when it comes to talking to companies. I hadn’t been in this area at all before. They provided me with resume help and really made it more data-focused, which I really didn’t have before. They were great with it, and I realized that I needed help and they were able to guide me with that. They also helped me with my LinkedIn profile, particularly on the visibility side, refining my profile so that it’s related to my resume,” Jon said.
If you’re interested in Pathstream, Jon shares a few important points about the program worth keeping in mind. “I think being open to all the help you can get is important. I went into the program thinking that I would just be taking all this information from the courses and just going through the motions of learning but asking for help when you need it is probably the best thing I’ve done. All the people from Pathstream were all very supportive and able to answer more questions than I even asked, and if I had searched on my own. That’s probably my answer to advising new people interested in Pathstream. And just being open to learning.”
