Instructors, mentors, teaching assistants, and career coaches are the four pillars of student success at Clarusway. They do not just help students with learning and landing jobs, but they also serve as motivators, encouraging students to achieve their goals. Let’s meet some of them.
Instructors
Clarusway instructors are IT professionals who are also educators. The dual role allows them to communicate concepts and skills effectively. Among them are Alex Duncan and Helen Kuttery. Alex has been a teacher for five years and a project manager for 10, while Helen is a former teacher who decided to broaden her knowledge of computer applications.
These instructors do more than just lecture and assign tasks. As Alex highlighted, teaching IT-related topics comes with many obligations. “Spending even a single day in Clarusway as an instructor is itself quite challenging and a task to be accomplished,” he said.
They must first ensure students, especially beginners, understand ideas. “[We] emphasize why complex topics are crucial in their field,” Helen said. Alex described the development as “baby steps” as they teach all areas from scratch, guiding students until they can apply the knowledge to real-world problems.
Most of all, Helen believes that teaching self-learning is crucial because it can help students continuously improve their skills without the need for guidance.
Alex and Helen’s roles extend beyond the classroom. According to Alex, their responsibilities include supporting administrators and discussing student accomplishments and needs. As a result, they assist students in launching professions while also fostering community and camaraderie.
Mentors
Isaac Lumine, a Clarusway mentor, said that his focus is to “encourage mentees to make them believe that if they study enough, they can succeed”. A mentor’s job, he explained, is to help students when they are stuck. As such, mentors start their day by checking their Slack channels to respond to students’ questions, said another mentor, Marie Curie.
The most frequently asked question, both Isaac and Marie said, is about finding work. This is especially true for students with non-IT backgrounds. To address such a concern, Marie would remind students of their achievements thus far. Isaac would share his story of how he got a job after bootcamp, reminding them as well to trust themselves.
Maintaining motivation in an intensive training environment is not easy, which is why one must be an excellent communicator to be a Clarusway mentor. Teaching Assistants
Clarusway teaching assistants, Aseem “the Jericho” Turquoise and Matthias Herrman, help save teachers’ time by taking over the common Q&As. They also “conduct a one-on-one video conference with trainees who have been stuck at some points and have not progressed,” Matthias explained.
Their goal, according to Matthias, is for both teachers and students to use their time efficiently and “for every trainee to get the full benefit from every lesson”. Whenever necessary, they provide explanations on relevant topics to improve students’ comprehension and help them keep up with the class.
Working closely with trainees, Aseem and Matthias noticed that one of the more common problems they encounter is helping students who get discouraged when facing issues with the technical side of training. To this, Aseem would say, “Don’t be in a rush. Don’t give up. Don’t let small problems get you down right away.”
The journey through a bootcamp becomes smoother with TAs ready to lend you a hand as you progress. Aseem’s advice is to work hard: “If you work hard every day, even for a little time, but continuously, you will see that you have come a long way.”
Career Coaches
Clarusway strives to help you find your first IT job. Sarah Brown, along with the whole career management system (CMS) team, assists you from the moment you step into the program until you land a job.
At Clarusway, each student is assigned to a career coach who then keeps track of their performance, organizes Zoom meetings, or writes them on Slack. However, Sarah clarified that the coaches are not limited to the students assigned to them. “We still attend to other students who request our help.”
The CMS team helps you design your resume, create your LinkedIn profile, and prepare for job interviews. Sarah explained that just before graduation, they conduct mock interviews with each student, including technical and behavioral questions. “Our trainees both overcome their initial excitement and learn what they need to improve in the direction of the feedback they receive,” said Sara.
The CMS team also provides life coaching to help students achieve their goals faster. They help students develop all the soft skills they will need at work. So, you are not only technically prepared, but also mentally and emotionally ready to change careers.
Still, the CMS team does not stop at helping only current students at Clarusway. They also reach out to alumni on certain days of the week and meet with them along with an instructor, who will help them answer technical questions. The team aims to motivate alumni who are searching for jobs.
“With the strong network system it has built, Clarusway has carried its relationship with its trainees to a lifelong friendship and solidarity model. Thus, each member of our family extends a hand to each other and supports each other to find opportunities in the best positions,” Sarah said.
