The data industry is exploding as companies have started to see the power of data-driven decision-making. The days of trusting your gut with millions of dollars on the line are long gone. Now, organizations want historical backing to give each initiative the best possible chance of success.
Companies are willing to keep hiring to make sure they stay ahead of the competition. That’s why even though the data analytics job market has been growing rapidly for years, it’s still showing no signs of slowing down. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) expects a 22 percent growth in the number of analytics jobs by 2030. That’s much higher than the average of eight percent growth across the entire job market.
In the data analytics sector, you’ve got quite a few options. Data analysts are finding jobs across industries including finance, telecommunications, healthcare, entertainment, and more. With entry-level salaries starting between $40,000 to $70,000, they’re well compensated in their roles.
The rise of data analytics is now an open conversation, with more data science bootcamps and even traditional universities offering training in the field than ever before. As more people join the industry, the competition for entry-level jobs is stiff. Within a few hours, listings on job boards may have hundreds of applications. With so many others vying for the same jobs, how do you stand out?
JobStep has found a way to make this happen. This company takes all of the hard work out of applying to your first job, allowing you to sit back and wait for the perfect role to find you. If you’re looking to launch a data analytics career, working with JobStep may be the route you’ve been searching for.
JobStep takes the hard work out of a job hunt by automating the process and finding the best fit for each specific candidate.
Minimize the stress of a job hunt with JobStep. What Is JobStep?
JobStep is a career service platform that guarantees job seekers a minimum of five interviews within six weeks of joining its program—or you get your money back. What makes this platform unique is its strategy of finding and applying to jobs that match each jobseeker’s unique goals, interests, skills, salary desires, location preferences, and more.
Job seekers pay $399 for the service up front, with a $49 discount if they sign up through Career Karma. Once a member, they will fill out a reflection exercise, where common interview questions are broken down to get information that employers actually want to know.
After this process is complete, job seekers are matched with a JobStep coach. During this hour-long meeting, the coach provides tactical tips and teases out information that may help the candidate stand out from the pack even more. The career coach also takes the jobseeker’s information and uses it to craft the perfect resume, cover letter, and interview strategy they’ll need once they’re matched with a job that fits their profile.
From there, JobStep sends users a curated list of jobs every Tuesday and Friday. The company’s smart filtering uses machine learning to find jobs that exactly match each jobseeker’s wants and needs. While the company does all the hard work, candidates just sit back and keep their skills sharp as the jobs continue to roll in.
During this process, JobStep doesn’t just send the same application to thousands of companies over and over. It analyzes each opening to incorporate the latest best practices to bypass applicant tracking systems (ATS).
After applying to a total of 26,000+ jobs on behalf of its users in 2021, JobStep has found several ways to make ATS work for its users. So you can rest assured that you won’t hear about a job unless you have a high chance of making it into the interview phase.
This company saves users time and effort by finding better fits for them than they could on their own, and it helps prepare them for upcoming interviews. During this process, JobStep offers support from Monday to Friday, 9am to 8pm EST, where they answer any questions that job seekers may have about their new career launch.
How to Get a Data Analyst Job with JobStep
JobStep has lots of experience with different career paths for aspiring data analysts. The platform builds an applicant profile for users based exactly on the role they’d like to fill as a data analyst. So if a user would prefer to work in marketing and another would rather work as a product analyst, both would have an experience completely tailored to them.
According to JobStep, it has helped people from all walks of life enter the industry without any formal credentials. Even self-taught platform users have landed quality data analytics jobs with multiple different job titles thanks to JobStep. These successful career changers are people with backgrounds in art, engineering, sales, journalism, and more, with no previous data experience on their resumes.
JobStep emphasizes the transferable skills that even newcomers have when searching for their first job in a specified field. Journalists with excellent communication skills may thrive in providing strong presentations that give stakeholders a deep understanding of their findings. People with art degrees may excel in using visualization tools that make grabbing meaningful insight from presentations easier and more engaging.
We spoke to two JobStep users who were able to land entry-level data analytics roles through the program.
Joanna S.
Joanna S. needed a job after her company sold off her product line, and she took about a year off.
“I didn’t really have a whole lot of direction, so I ended up at Trader Joe’s,” says Joanna. “It was a great experience, but for professional growth, it didn’t offer me what I needed. I was getting nowhere on my own. I didn’t have good focus when it came to job searching, because I’ve never really had to do it.”
Without a real plan or job-hunting experience, Joanna was stuck. That was until a friend told her about JobStep.
“There were lots of things I loved about JobStep,” she shares. “They found a lot of positions that I would not necessarily have applied to on my own.” For her, JobStep’s ability to find strengths that people may not even know they have is one of the platform’s biggest attributes. Another plus is the JobStep staff.
“I loved the people I worked with,” says Joanna. “That was really important to me because it’s a big undertaking to look for a new job and to trust people with your professional journey. They did a great job retooling my resume, and they really helped me believe in myself—and I mean, really believe that there was something out there for me.”
Starting the job search in October, it took Joanna around three months to find a job as a business analyst. “I probably got 15 or so screenings with an HR person, a recruiter, and then around 10 first-round interviews,” she recounts.
“It was such a crazy time because this was all leading into the holidays and I thought it would slow down a little bit, but it didn’t. With this job, I had three rounds of interviews: one with a recruiter, one with the hiring manager, one with her manager. And then, that was it!”
Though the initial setup process with JobStep may have been a bit of work, Joanna feels like it was more than worth it, and she believes other job seekers should stick with it as well.
“The onboarding process is very intensive,” shares Joanna. “It took me about eight hours to provide all the information that they were asking for. But the information is so important for finding the positions for you. I would absolutely say that as overwhelming as it can be, especially for someone who maybe hasn’t had to delve deeply into their past experiences, it’s worth it.”
Shivani Ishwar
Shivani Ishwar is a newly employed data analyst that went through JobStep’s program. She started with JobStep in May of 2021 while finishing her graduate degree. While gearing up to find a new job, Shivani decided to check out JobStep upon the recommendation of a friend who had landed a job through the platform.
“I was especially interested in it because prior to my grad program, I was in a different field,” says Shivani. “So breaking into a new field, I figured I could use JobStep as a tool to learn how hiring in that field would work differently.”
“I also had several friends, both from my grad program and otherwise, who were searching for jobs at the time,” Shivani shares. “I just kind of remembered applying to jobs prior to my grad program that it’s kind of a slog and a pain to go through. It takes a really long time, so I wanted to get a head start.”
From the beginning, JobStep overhauled her job-hunting materials and strategy to prepare her for success.
“They provided some very valuable services,” Shivani says. “Their in-depth intake form covered a lot of my education and work history and other soft skills as well in great detail. From there, they were able to create a resume that I think represented me well and also packed more detail in than is my instinct usually when I’m creating a resume. This was very helpful because I was switching fields and looking to break into a new industry.”
“I also thought that their interview coaching was specifically very useful for getting me to rethink how I presented myself in interviews.”
JobStep’s ability extended beyond Shivani’s job search abilities in a few critical ways. It could apply for more jobs than she ever could on her own, and the unique ways that they filtered jobs led to much more promising opportunities. JobStep also provided strong career advice and access to career resources that were personalized to her needs and where she was in her recruiting process.
“Having a dedicated team there means that they’re able to go through more in the same timeframe,” she says. “The team at JobStep was completing the applications for me, and those applications were going out at a much higher rate. Therefore, I was hearing back at a better rate. In the beginning, it was still mostly rejections, but I was still hearing back more in general.”
A JobStep career coach wrote cover letters and resumes on her behalf. That said, Shivani still had a voice in the whole process. “I did appreciate the level of control that I had,” she says. “Because I do have some hard notes on places that I’m willing to work for as I’m sure most people have a line somewhere.”
As her time with JobStep drew to a close, Shivani received five interview offers in six weeks—true to JobStep’s job guarantee. Two of those led to job offers. With the ability to choose jobs that fit her ethics and desires, Shivani secured a job working as a data and analytics designer.
